RACING HISTORY:

In my ownership Redbreast has had a very successful racing career. Winner in Sovereigns Cup, Kinsale and winner of numerous trophies on Lough Derg, including 4 times winner of the Gortmore Bell and of Commodore’s Cup in Iniscealtra, winner of Visitor’s Cup, Koe Cup and Garanfada Cup in LDYC and winner of Visitor’s cup, Barge Wheel and other trophies on numerous occasions in home club, Garrykennedy Sailing Club.

CONDITION:

Redbreast is in excellent condition. It is as Stephen Jones designed it – with runners and checks and without the extra 4” keel extension retro fitted to a number of the Formula 28s [although I have the cast lead extension]. The self polishing anti-fouling is removed each winter and the yacht spends 5 months out of the water each season. As the hull has never been painted any blemish is easily seen and there is virtually no damage to any part of the hull or deck.

Redbreast has a large inventory of sails. Westaway Sails were previous owners, a number of the Dacron sails have been well used but I have always kept a suit of sails that I have saved as ‘regatta sails’ and never used these in breezier conditons preferring to use an older Dacron sail. Currently I have two suits of ‘regatta sails’ by Watson Sails, Airframe Pentex, Platinum TS Pentex that have had very light use, not flaked, always rolled after sailing and left in my sail loft and never on the boat and absolutely never on the boom!! One these is virtually new and the other main/genoa very lightly used, they differ in size of roach on the main and one genoa is a little flatter with pentex scrim for medium conditions. The value of these 2 suits of sails is around €7,000.

I have experimented with a masthead spinnaker which gives an extra 6’ of hoist and area but have only used this in very light conditions as I haven’t fitted jumpers, although the mast has been modified for them. The masthead spinnaker gives astonishing down wind speed in light conditions. I planned on applying for a trial cert to establish its rating but have never gotten around to it! So have only tried out the masthead spin on a few occasions. There are two aluminium spinnaker poles, one at standard J and the other a little longer for the masthead.

The four Harken towed genoa cars work brilliantly under load as does the Harken mainsheet system. The majority of the roller blocks on board are Harken also.

ENGINE:

The Bukh diesel saildrive is a very neat installation and works well. The Gori twin blade folding prop is in as new condition.

INSTRUMENTS:

There are is an Autohelm ST50 set of instruments [but I usually don’t bother fiddling with the annoying daisy chain system] including wind. I usually only rely on the windex, the speed, the KVH sailcomp and the seat of my pants!! The speed/log is mounted on the mast as is the Sailcomp

INTERIOR:

There are four pipe cots with extra cushioning, a pivoting chart table, sea toilet and cooker.

Boat Location

Unnamed Road, Youghalvillage, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

Yachts and Sailing Cruisers are one of the most popular categories of boats sailed in Ireland and typically range in overall length (LOA) from about 6 metres (20ft) to well over 30 metres (98ft). Anything bigger and it's a super-yacht! Boats value in price from simple starter boats for less than €20,000 but go right up to over €1million. Regardless of what you are after, we have a huge range in our listings below:

There is a vast array of makes models and types of rigs so choosing a yacht for sale can be hard for a novice. How can you tell a Beneteau from a Jeanneau? What's the difference between a sloop and a ketch? Yachts and sailing cruisers are commonly know by their rig and sail plan types: a Bermudan sloop is of the most common but gaff and ketch rigs are one of the most popular categories of boats sailed in Ireland.

Most sailing cruisers on Irish waters are in the six to ten metre category and offer the protection of a cabin for over nighting and the Irish climate. There are different types of sailing cruisers including day sailors which are just one step up from a dinghy, weekenders which might have a twin keel and then sailing cruisers by the far the most common type of yacht in private use, making up most of the 7 metres (23ft) - 14 metres (46ft) range.

Sailing cruisers are used for many different activities from gentle harbour sailing and day cruising right up to blue water cruising and voyages across oceans. Smaller sailing cruiser examples are yachts from the Beneteau and Jeanneau ranges, Westerly, Albin Vega, Galion, Hurley, Jaguar, Etap to name just a few. From 20 foot trailer-sailers right up to Volvo Ocean Racers (VOR) they have all featured on our sailing cruisers for sale pages.

There is a very active racing scene around Irish water and each year sailing cruisers come together for national championships of all types of boats that compete together based on size and handicaps. Production boats compete with quite a lot of custom made sailing cruiser racers such as designs from the drawing boards of naval architects such as Mark Mills, John Corby, Jason Ker and Bruce Farr. There is a vast array of makes models and types of rigs so choosing a yacht for sale can be hard for a novice.
