President Higgins will mark the beginning of the Bicentenary of Dun Laoghaire Harbour next Wednesday (May 31st) by installing a new time capsule in the harbourside George IV Memorial. The Memorial already has a time capsule from May 31st 1817, within which are ten contemporary newspapers and a coin of the realm.
In the new capsule, we’re told here, will be drawings from local schoolchildren, a newspaper of the day (yes, just one), recent photographs of the harbour, and letters from the RNLI, the Coast Guard, the Coal Harbour Users Group, and An Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council.
And that, apparently, is that. There seems to be no place in the tin for contributions from some other very real harbour users such as Irish Lights, St Michael’s Rowing Club, the two sailing schools, the four waterfront yacht clubs and the most vocal users of the harbour as a source of recreation and improved public health, the Save Our Seafront movement.
We’re supposed to be living in an era of inclusivity, in which everyone feels involved with their environment, how it is looked after, and how they live in it. While those invited to a place in the capsule are certainly very worthy of it, they aren’t by any means representative of all contemporary harbour users in the broadest possible way.
So who do you think should be given a place in the Time Capsule? Think about it. This is a once-in-two-hundred-years opportunity to have your say. Vote in our poll below and please feel free to leave us a comment below too.
