Budget application - the iPhone SailMaster

16th July 2009

Costing less than stand-alone tactical systems, the SailMaster application for the Apple iPhone gives you all the information you need to optimise sailing and racing performance, claim the manufacturers. Originally designed as an economical tool for experienced sailors to optimise performance, the ease of use and low cost of the racing application means that all levels can benefit without bankruptcy.

Key performance data is displayed in a clar and easy to read format and has more features than a lot of the current devices, it can be downloaded from the Apple Apps Store at a price tag of $12 (you work out the rate).

It gives you:

SPEED in either knots of km/h

VMG Velocity Made Good

DIRECTION expressed as a compass heading

WAYPOINTS/COURSE PLOTTING using GPS co-ordinates, courses are plotted by setting waypoints which can be saved for future reference

COURSE VARIANCE indicated in degrees as either a lift (+) or header (–). Key indicator of optimal time to tack

ANGLE OF HEEL displayed in both numeric and chart formats

STARTER LINE COUNTDOWN configurable for a 15, 10, 5 or 3 minute countdown.

TIDES displays direction with the time and height of the next full tide

Users can receive all future applicaiton upgrades at no extra cost, and no operation manual is required, and no other hardware or software is needed other than the iPhone 3G. Waterproof casing is provided.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
