The Irish squads results will seem unremarkable to outsiders until you consider that their fleets are at the most competitive stage of the Olympic cycle. Just over nine weeks remain until the beginning of the Games, so the top of each fleet should be packed with the best of the best of the best, all performing towards their peak.
Top of the pile of paddies is Tim Goodbody, lying tenth in the Finn class after day one, with two elevenths in his pocket. The Finn class is one of two that are trialling live, realtime race tracking software that allows you to watch every move, shift and lane change the sailors make. (Try it, and track Tim's every move here)
Next up are disputed Star nominees Peter O'Leary and Stephen Milne, lying 14th, with Ger Owens and Phil Lawton in the 470 lying 15th. Radial sailor Ciara Peelo is in 27th position out of 71 sailors.

A little aside: Have pity the event's new sponsors Delta Lloyd. For most sailors, your correspondent included, this event has always and will always be known as SPA. SPA spring water sponsored the event for 20 years, and the simple, monosyllabic moniker by which it has become known across the world is likely to stick for some time to come.
