With the Irish 470 and Finn teams finished, the two boats still on the water, the Star and Laser Radial, are slipping further and further from the top ten.
Ciara Peelo, who has competed eight of her nine scheduled heat races, lies in 23rd overall, 36 points clear of the medal race zone and officially out of the running. Peelo never looked like challenging in race 7, the first race today, hitting the top mark in 23rd position and sliding to her finishing position, 25th, gradually throughout the race.
Race eight started in similar territory, 24th, but Peelo clawed herself back to 16th in breeze that halved from 16 knots to just eight by the end of the race.
No good news either from the Star camp, where Peter O'Leary and Stephen Milne have failed to match their early form in tricky medium conditions off Qingdao. A 12th and 13th so far today puts them in 13th overall out of 16th.
With the ISA targeting at least one top eighth finish, but so far looking at nothing better than 13th, a reassessment will be on the cards. Qingdao, with its light airs and strong currents, was always going to be tough, but few realised just how tough.
Our neighbours, on the other hand, are putting on an impressive show. Team GBR have nabbed the gold in the Finn (Ben Ainslie) and the Yngling (Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson), with Nick Rogers and Jo Glanfield taking their second consecutive silver in the 470, and Paul Goodison poised to add another gold to that tally in the Laser. Iain Percy also sits just two points off bronze in the Star.
Australia, too, have their share of the gold. Both 470 golds went to Australia, with the ladies' Perth-based pairing (Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson) overcoming six months of debilitating illness on Rechichi's part to win the gold, and the mens team (Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page) proving paragons of consistency, with the win assured before the medal race despite failing to post a single race win.
