Collision regulations to be highlighted in Cork

26th September 2008

A series of near collisions between yachts and shipping this summer in Cork harbour has led to a mandatory attendance for yachtsmen at the Royal Cork Yacht Club on Sunday.

All skippers competing in the club's annual October league will be addressed by the Port of Cork at a pre event briefing at 10am that will stress the collision regulations.

It is expected that the obligation of lesiure craft not to interfere with commercial shipping will be underlined in the light of recent incidents.

In one incident in the lower harbour area a dredger skipper had to go full astern to avoid two yachts competing in a club race.

In a note on its website the club insists that skippers must sign a form to indicate attendance. Any entry that fails to attend this briefing will not be given a result for the event.
