Kinsale hosts Nations Cup qualifier

22nd October 2008

Kinsale Yacht Club hosts the ISAF Nations Cup 2009 Regional Final Europe this morning. 10 Nations will compete for a place in the Grand Final, in this Grade 2 event, on the waters of Kinsale’s inner harbour, with this natural amphitheatre lending itself as a grand stand venue.

The action over the four days is scheduled to take place in the vicinity of the Charles Fort line thereby ensuring thrilling viewing for the spectator.

This International match race event will be competed in the ISA’s Sailfleet J80 sportsboats. Ireland is represented by John Sheehy of the Royal St George Yacht Club, who will compete against teams from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia. However, with over half the fleet in the top fifty of the ISAF World Match Race rankings, qualification for the host nation in this Regional Final is not a guaranteed. Some ‘local knowledge’ from one of the sailors in this friendly Southcoast club should assist though.

With the river in flood and strong winds forecast, conditions on the course should prove testing.
