Spring tides warning

23rd October 2008

Irish Water Safety has issued a bank holiday warning to the public not to take unnecessary risks. An unsettled windy weekend combined with the approaching Spring tides as we draw near a new moon on Tuesday signals a warning to those engaged in water based activities to be on alert.

Surfers / Kayakers / Windsurfers and Kite Surfers will experience a more hazardous environment due to the tides and inclement weather and should wear suitable wet suits or dry suits and make arrangements not to go out alone.

Walkers should remain alert and stay well away from the edge of ordinarily familiar waterside pathways due to the risk of stranding as a result of the high tides.

Anglers will be at risk and foreign nationals in particular should be extremely vigilant as the Atlantic swell is dramatically different to that experienced on the relatively calmer Baltic Sea.

Those who venture afloat this weekend should ensure that their family and friends wear a personal flotation device or lifejacket at all times.

Those angling, shooting or cruising should have warm clothing and quality wet weather gear suitable  for this type of activity.

Remember your lifeline in an emergency is 999 and 112 therefore carry a mobile phone and ask for the Marine Rescue.

Irish Water Safety encourages everyone to take swimming, lifesaving, survival and rescue classes for further information click on www.iws.ie.
