Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat rescues 4

15th December 2008

At 15.09hrs Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched following a request from Valentia Coast Guard to assist 4 persons on board a speed boat with engine failure and aground South West of Garrykennedy, Lough Derg.

The lifeboat with helm Eleanor Hooker, Margaret Ryan and Gavin Rea onboard located and was alongside the vessel at 15.20hrs. Weather conditions were extremely cold, 0˚C, with a Northerly wind, visibility was very good.  All persons were safe and unharmed and all were wearing lifejackets.  The casualty vessel had suffered engine failure and was blown onto the rocks but was not holed. The lifeboat approached as close to the vessel as was safe, and an RNLI crew member took a tow line across.  With an RNLI crew member onboard, the casualty vessel with her passengers was towed to the public harbour at Garrykennedy, where they were met by family members.
