9th February 2009

Team USA 1 from the New York Yacht Club are the 2009 ISAF Team Racing World Champions, defeating the local AUS 1 team in the final in Perth, Australia to successfully defend the title they won two years ago. Ireland finished 11th in a tight final where the Skerries based team concentrated on moving up the ladder.

The American team of Clay Bischoff, Lisa Keith, Colin Merrick, Amanda Callahan, Pete Levesque and Liz Hall lived up to their billing as favourites to swept to victory in Perth.

The team from the New York Yacht Club have proved themselves a class apart over recent years and arrived in Perth as hot favourites to defend the ISAF Team Racing World Championship title they won in Gandia, Spain two years ago. Despite fierce competition from the best team racing outfits from around the world, the Americans dominated the racing from day one. Of their 52 matches against 14 teams spread over four round robin series, they won 47 - a 90% winning record - way ahead of the next best AUS 1 on 71%.

Team USA 1 were even more dominant in the knock out stages - sweeping to victory 2-0 against the home favourites AUS 1 from the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, joint hosts of the 2009 Team Worlds. Jasper Warren, Jamie Turner, David Gilmour, Aimee Negri, Luke Parkinson and Patrick Vos add the 2009 ISAF Team Racing World Championship silver medal to the Ciudad de Gandia Trophy they captured earlier in the week for winning the Under 21 competition.

Completing the podium were the NZL 1 team of Reuben Corbett, Jesse Tuke, Bradley Farrand, Natasha Sheldon, Peter Burling and Nick Gunn.
