Creamer's 'reading' transatlantic crossing to be recalled

20th April 2009

American sailor Marvin Creamer who sailed across the Atlantic from Baltimore, West Cork thirty years ago by only reading the stars is to be celebrated at home next month for a circumnavigation by similar means. A 25th anniversary celebration of the completion of Creamer's historical circumnavigation without instruments will take place on May 17, 2009, from noon until 4:00 PM, at the Red Bank Battlefield, in National Park, NJ. This location is where Marvin dropped anchor in the Delaware River in1984. Marvin is now a spry 93 years young.

25 years ago, in his 36-foot sailboat, Marvin Creamer accomplished something that has never been done since man began sailing. He circumnavigated the world without the use of any navigation instruments of any kind. No compass, no sextant, no timepiece or electronic device to help him in any way. This was a major navigational feat.

Among the many awards recognizing this historic accomplishment were:

• The coveted Blue Water Medal, sailing’s highest honor, by the Cruising Club of America

• Medal of Achievement for Performance Cruising, by the Yacht Racing/Cruising Magazine

• Inducted into Cruising World's Hall of Fame

• Installed as an honorary member of the Circumnavigators Club
