'No VOR launching charges' - Galway Bay SC

7th May 2009

Galway Bay Sailing Club will not be charging for launching any craft during the Volvo race stopover in spite of earlier website reports to the contrary. This evening GBSC club secretary Colm Moriarity moved to clarify the position for those intending to park RIBs and spectator craft at the club. The full GBSC statement covering arrangements at Rinville is over the fold:

"Galway Bay Sailing Club wish to clarify certain issues arising from an article in the ISA newsletter regarding launching and parking of boats during the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) stopover in Galway this summer.

The assertion that the Galway Bay Sailing Club is charging or intends to charge for the launching of any craft at the Rinville public slipway is erroneous. The GBSC has made provision for the parking of cars and boat trailers on it's and adjoining lands for which there is a small charge payable.

Due to the nature of the narrow access road to Rinville Pier the Galway Bay Sailing Club in conjunction with Galway County Council, the Garda Síochana, Galway Civil Defence and Let's Do It Galway will have traffic management procedures in place over the three week-ends of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover to facilitate all visiting craft wishing to launch and retrieve at Rinville. At all other times there is unrestricted access to the area.

There is no parking allowed at any time on the public pier at Rinville by Order of the Galway County Council. It is the wish of Galway Bay Sailing Club, Galway County Council, the Garda Síochana and Let's Do It Galway that all owners launching at Rinville slip will do so in an ordered, timely manner and will either avail of the parking facilities provided or remove their vehicle and/or trailer from the area so as to facilitate other users.

On behalf of the Galway Bay Sailing Club, I extend the warmest welcome to all who will be visiting Galway and especially to those who be taking part in the various events organised by the Club during the VOR Stopover."

Colm Moriarty,
Secretary,
Galway Bay Sailing Club.
