Lough Derg Lifeboat launches for vessel on rocks

17th May 2009

Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched following a request from Valentia Coast Guard to go the assistance of  eight persons on board a 42ft cruiser on rocks at the Goat Road. The RNLI lifeboat with helm, Eleanor Hooker, Colin Knight and Ciaran Murphy on board, launched today at 16.55hrs.

Weather conditions were fair; south easterly winds Force 3 to 4 but with poor visibility due to torrential driving rain.  The lifeboat located the 44ft cruiser inside the Goat Rd. and was alongside at 17.10hrs. An RNLI crew member boarded the vessel and reported that all persons on board were safe, unharmed and wearing lifejackets and that the vessel was not holed.  Two cruisers were standing by in safe waters when the lifeboat arrived on scene. The casualty vessel was taken off the rocks and towed to deep water where a full check of steering and engine was carried out.  The lifeboat paced with cruiser and the RNLI crew member transferred back to the lifeboat, the cruiser then continued on her journey and the lifeboat returned to Station and was ready for service again at 18.15hrs.
