After years of relatively static currency exchange rates, the volatile money markets of 2016 make the UK used-boats scene of special interest writes W M Nixon. The thought that a shrewd purchase could save you thousands of euro on the price you might have paid for a quality boat only a week or two earlier is enough to get anyone excited.

But the sheer number of boats in the largest fleet concentrations in the greater Solent area is bewildering in its variety to anyone not closely familiar with the region. The layout is deceptively simple. At 35ft, you’re obliged to use the deckhouse both as the wheelhouse and the main saloon. It makes most sense. Anything else is pretentious. But it does mean that it has to be accepted that the owner’s stateroom is two V-berths forward in order to provide space for a proper galley, toilet/shower, and dining area admidships, for there’s only so much you can do in 35ft without making it absurdly crowded.
