After years of relatively static currency exchange rates, the volatile money markets of 2016 make the UK used-boats scene of special interest writes W M Nixon. The thought that a shrewd purchase could save you thousands of euro on the price you might have paid for a quality boat only a week or two earlier is enough to get anyone excited.

But the sheer number of boats in the largest fleet concentrations in the greater Solent area is bewildering in its variety to anyone not closely familiar with the region. So switched-on Irish brokers with direct Solent experience have been quick to appreciate that they can offer a very special service in guiding would-be owners directly to the best boat for their needs at the optimum price.

The Seaward range of able power-cruisers are in what could best be described as the classic Keith Nelson/Tom Thorneycroft Pilotyacht style, and they’ll appeal to owners who want to be able to include proper cruising and sea-keeping ability with decent speed potential in their total boat package.

With this Solent-based Seaward 35 of 2005 build being offered by Crosshaven Boatyard at around €190,000 (it’s today’s exchange rate price on £159,950 ex VAT), we’re certainly not looking at an inexpensive offering. But you’re getting an ocean-proven boat which has comfortably carried her experienced owner (he’s on his fourth Seaward) frequently across the English Channel and down the Brittany coast, and for good measure he has swept through the Scottish Hebrides as well.

The layout is deceptively simple. At 35ft, you’re obliged to use the deckhouse both as the wheelhouse and the main saloon. It makes most sense. Anything else is pretentious. But it does mean that it has to be accepted that the owner’s stateroom is two V-berths forward in order to provide space for a proper galley, toilet/shower, and dining area admidships, for there’s only so much you can do in 35ft without making it absurdly crowded.

The result is a fine, capable vessel for genuine cruising enthusiasts. Twin Yanmar 370 disesels provide an impressive power package, and with an experienced broker handling the sale, the new hassle of international dealing becomes manageable. Full advert on Afloat Boats for Sale here

Seaward 35 The layout of the Seaward 35 strikes a neat balance between expectations and what can reasonably be achieved in just 35ft of overall length.
