19th April 2010

A woman out walking her dog had a lucky escape this afternoon when she became trapped in mud near Hop Island in Cork harbour on a rising tide. The women went after her dog which ran onto the mud banks and became trapped.

With the tide rising rapidly, The Crosshaven volunteer RNLI Lifeboat was launched at 15.09 and crewed by volunteers Vincent Fleming, Bernard Lynch and Dennis Cronin.

The Coastguard Helicopter was also scrambled as were Crosshaven Coastguard and the Fire Service.

When the Lifeboat arrived, crewman Bernard Lynch entered the water to reassure the women who was by now Waist deep in water and managed to extricate her and take her and her dog onto the Lifeboat. The lifeboat crew landed the lady to the care of Ambulance personnel.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
