Raising the Asgard is a possibility

11th September 2008

The Irish Government and French authorities are piecing together the last hours of the state owned Asgard II after she sank en route to La Rochelle yesterday. Although she sank in deep water 20 miles off the French coast but raising her has not been ruled out.

Minister of Defence Willie O'Dea said last night the Government is assessing the viability of salvaging Asgard II. 20 trainees and five crew were rescued by the French coastguard.

A former Asgard mate Paddy Boyd told RTE television news last night that whatever decision is taken it is vital for all tall ship sailors that the reason behind the loss  is quickly established.
