Irish Gather in Mallorca

22nd April 2010
Irish Gather in Mallorca
Ireland's Olympic hopefuls will gather in Mallorca this week ahead of the first major European event of the season. The Trofeo Princess Sofia will see seven Irish boats compete, with all eyes on one pairing, hoping to make a return to Olympian form.

Ger Owens and Ross Killian will mark their return to Olympic campaigning in a bay that has become their second home. The pair based themselves on and off in Palma when campaigning a 470 for the Athens Olympiad, and know the bay well. They will line out against seasoned 49er campaigners Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern in what will be the first opportunity for spectators to compare the two and see how Owens (twice an Olympian) and Killian (a one-timer) fare in their new craft.

In the Laser Radials, meanwhile, the ladies will fly three tricolors, with Annalise Murphy, Tiffany Brien and Debbie Hanna joining the 72-boat fleet.

James Espey will represent Ireland in the Laser, with Ross Hamilton the sole Irish rep in the Finn class.
