Inquest Hears Kayaker Died While Paddling Fast Flowing Rapids

#Kayaking - A young Baldoyle man who lost his life in a kayaking tragedy in Wicklow last year had been paddling in fast flowing rapids, an inquest into his death has heard.

As previously reported on Afloat.ie, 21-year-old Shane Murphy, an experienced kayaker, died after he was swept away while paddling with a group on the River Inchavore on Thursday 13 November.

Dublin Coroner's Court heard last week that Murphy and his three friends had judged the river, which was swollen from heavy rain the night before, was within their capabilities, according to the Irish Examiner.

However, as fellow kayaker Phillip Connolly told the court, it was not long before the group got into difficulty, with Murphy getting caught in what's known as a 'hydraulic stopper' before capsizing.

Despite righting himself a number of times, he was rendered unconscious - possibly by a knock to the head, according to coroner Dr Brian Farrell – and could not be revived by emergency personnel.

The Irish Examiner has more on the story HERE.
