Ireland Lightweight Four For B Final at World Under-23 Championships

#Rowing: Ireland finished fifth in the repechage of the lightweight four at the World Under-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and will compete in the B Final. France took control of the race and held off challenges to win. The United States took the other A Final place. Surprisingly, Denmark could only take fourth, exactly two seconds ahead of the Ireland crew of Shane Mulvaney, Chris Beck, Lloyd Seaman and David O’Malley.

The Ireland lightweight double of Liam Keane and Stephen O’Connor finished fifth in their quarter final. Spain – who had a blistering start – Italy and Hungary took the A/B semi-final places. Ireland were sixth until the final quarter, in which they passed Russia.

Fintan McCarthy competed in a competitive repechage of the lightweight single sculls. Iurii Lesnov of Russia took the first qualification place by taking the lead and holding it to the finish, but behind him Filip Nilsson of Sweden and McCarthy swapped second place between them. Slovenia’s Ales Jalen made an impressive move in the final third and secured the crucial second spot. McCarthy was pushed into fourth by Nilsson.
