Coady Does Ireland Proud at World Surfing Games

Ireland's sole representative at the 2010 ISA World Surfing Games was lucky to even make it to the contest last week in Peru - thanks to a little help from his friends.

John Coady told SurferToday.com how the economic downturn caused the Irish team to lose their main sponsor, leaving them with no funding to make the trip to South America.

But fans and friends of Coady from the forum at LongboardIreland.com saved the day (SEE VIDEO HERE).

He said: "I had some friends call me up and ask 'If we find the support for you will you go?' My response was 'Absolutely!' Three weeks later I was fully funded."

Although the West Sligo Surf Club longboarder failed to advance, taking third place in his heat, he put up a strong showing and kept Ireland away from the last spot in the final standings.

Host nation Peru took away the gold at the end of eight days of competition, holding off the chalenge of Australia, South Africa and Brazil.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
