The RNLI is a registered charity that saves lives at sea. It provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service 100 nautical miles out from the coast of Ireland and the UK. The RNLI relies on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.
Lifeboats Ireland covers 43 lifeboat stations throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic, including inland stations at Enniskillen and Lough Derg. The fundraising regional office, based in Swords, covers fundraising activities for the whole of Ireland.
Volunteer crew members readily exchange leisure, comfort and sleep for cold, wet and fatigue. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous.
The RNLI is always looking for staff and volunteers at its various offices, stations and beaches around the UK and Republic of Ireland.
People from all walks of life help the RNLI to save lives at sea. Thousands of volunteers and staff give their time, skill and commitment.
The RNLI aims to save lives by changing attitudes and behaviour among people who use the sea regularly.
RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 100 beaches in the UK in peak season and assisted almost 10,000 people last year.
Last year (2008) RNLI lifeboats rescued almost 8,000 people, an average of 21 people a day.
