Route to Galway nearly complete

22nd April 2010
Route to Galway nearly complete
The route for the longest trip to Galway is nearly complete, with just one gap remaining in the Volvo Ocean Race itinerary. The pic (over the fold) shows that with the announcement of a Miami stopover, only one pacific gap in proceedings remains.

The race will kick off in Alicante, heading to South Africa, Abu Dhabi and then Sanya in China. There then exists a gap as the fleet crosses the Pacific Ocean and rounds Cape Horn before heading to Itajai in Brazil. After Itajai, it's Miami-Lisbon-Lorient before the final push to Galway for the grand finale.

But the gap remains the question, and could potentially pave the way for a return to either Australia or New Zealand. The 2008/09 race was the first edition ever to snub Oceania entirely, with no stop in Australia or New Zealand.

The entire route will be finalised before March 31, so stay tuned.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
