O'Donovan is Afloat Rower of the Month for July
#ROWING: Paul O’Donovan is the Afloat Rower of Month for July. The 20-year-old UCD man reached the final of very competitive lightweight single sculls at the World Under-23 Championships in Varese in Italy. He finished fourth, just one place off his finish last year – and he has two more years left in this grade.
At the Irish Rowing Championships, O’Donovan finished second to heavyweight oarsman John Keohane in the senior single sculls.

O'Donovan Completes Medal Haul For Ireland Rowing Team
#ROWING: Paul O’Donovan set an excellent time and took a bronze medal at the first international regatta of the season for the Ireland team. The Skibbereen lightweight sculler was not far off gold in a tight finish which saw him finish in 7:03 at the Memorial Paolo d’Aloja in Piediluco in Italy today. All four Ireland crews which competed at the regatta today took medals.

#ROWING: Paul O’Donovan qualified for the final of the lightweight single sculls at the Memorial Paolo d’Aloja regatta in Italy. The Skibbereen 19-year-old, who was a late addition to the team, was a close-up second in his heat at Piediluco, in one of the best times of the day.
Ireland Rowers O'Donovan, McCrohan and Puspure Excel in Trial
#ROWING: On a day with a spread of excellent performances, Paul O’Donovan, Siobhán McCrohan and Sanita Puspure topped the rankings in their classes at the Ireland trial on Newry Canal. O’Donovan, a 19-year-old lightweight sculler, was the fastest man on the day. He clocked 19 minutes 5.46 seconds for the five kilometres, which made him the fourth fastest crew, only bettered by three heavyweight pairs.
McCrohan’s return was also remarkable. The Galway lightweight, who was cut by the previous Ireland coaching regime, shaded O’Donovan in terms of per centage of projected world gold medal time, with a superb 87.43 per cent. Puspure, a heavyweight sculler who had a 2013 to forget because of injury, also excelled, with 86.99 per cent despite a brush with a tree and hitting a buoy in the headwind conditions.
Both men’s and women’s lightweight classes could boast a depth in good performances: Catríona Jennings, a former Olympian marathon runner who is new to rowing, reaced 86.26 of projected world best time as a lightweight sculler. Heavyweight sculler Monika Dukarska also performed well in finishing second to Puspure.

Skibbereen's Paul O'Donovan is Rower of the Month for July
#rowerofthemonth: Paul O'Donovan, who was the Afloat Rower of the Month for June, has won the award again for July. The 19-year-old Skibbereen man, a UCD Scholarship Student, continued on his remarkable run when he took the bronze medal in the lightweight single sculls at the World Under-23 Championships at Linz-Ottensheim in Austria.
O'Donovan won his heat and his quarter-final and finished second to Andrew Campbell Jr of the United States in the semi-final. The American was dominant in the final, with Franciscus Goutier of the Netherlands taking silver ahead of O'Donovan, who outpaced Adam Ling of New Zealand to win his medal.
Ireland crews have a fine record at the World Under-23 Championships, stretching back to the days when it was the Match des Seniors and then the Nations Cup. The 13 medals came in this fashion:

# ROWING: The Afloat Rower of the Month for November is Paul O’Donovan. The 18-year-old lightweight sculler covered the five-kilometre time trial on Newry Canal faster than any other competitor in the National Assessment. The Skibbereen man finished fourth in the single sculls at the World Junior Championships in 2011. He is now on scholarship to University College, Dublin.
