Owners Comments

"Waratah" is a 1969, Contessa 26 (Hull No. 197), built by Jeremy Rogers in Lymington. She was purchased by us in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim in March 2002. Before this she had two previous owners. In her previous ownership it is understood she generally spent no more than two months afloat each year. This was due to insurance restrictions related to weather. Since 2002 she has always been wintered ashore from October to May.

Construction

GRP hull and deck, long keel (encapsulated lead) and transom/keel hung rudder.

Rig and Rigging: Masthead Sloop, fitted with a Furlex 100s Headsail Furling System (2003) and an Inner Forestay. Standing Rigging was renewed in 2007. All running rigging is in good condition.

General Comment

The Contessa 26 is a long-keeled sailing vessel based on the lines of the Folkboat. Whilst not as roomy as a more modern vessel, their relatively narrow beam enables an easily-driven hull with a light and very balanced helm. They are extremely well mannered to sail and have a very sea-kindly motion.

Broker's Comment

"This yacht has classic lines and will be a joy to sail. She is excellent value and viewing is recommended."

Boat Location

Yachts and Sailing Cruisers are one of the most popular categories of boats sailed in Ireland and typically range in overall length (LOA) from about 6 metres (20ft) to well over 30 metres (98ft). Anything bigger and it's a super-yacht! Boats value in price from simple starter boats for less than €20,000 but go right up to over €1million. Regardless of what you are after, we have a huge range in our listings below:

There is a vast array of makes models and types of rigs so choosing a yacht for sale can be hard for a novice. How can you tell a Beneteau from a Jeanneau? What's the difference between a sloop and a ketch? Yachts and sailing cruisers are commonly know by their rig and sail plan types: a Bermudan sloop is of the most common but gaff and ketch rigs are one of the most popular categories of boats sailed in Ireland.

Most sailing cruisers on Irish waters are in the six to ten metre category and offer the protection of a cabin for over nighting and the Irish climate. There are different types of sailing cruisers including day sailors which are just one step up from a dinghy, weekenders which might have a twin keel and then sailing cruisers by the far the most common type of yacht in private use, making up most of the 7 metres (23ft) - 14 metres (46ft) range.

Sailing cruisers are used for many different activities from gentle harbour sailing and day cruising right up to blue water cruising and voyages across oceans. Smaller sailing cruiser examples are yachts from the Beneteau and Jeanneau ranges, Westerly, Albin Vega, Galion, Hurley, Jaguar, Etap to name just a few. From 20 foot trailer-sailers right up to Volvo Ocean Racers (VOR) they have all featured on our sailing cruisers for sale pages.

There is a very active racing scene around Irish water and each year sailing cruisers come together for national championships of all types of boats that compete together based on size and handicaps. Production boats compete with quite a lot of custom made sailing cruiser racers such as designs from the drawing boards of naval architects such as Mark Mills, John Corby, Jason Ker and Bruce Farr.
