#MarineWildlife - A trio of pilot whales were lucky to be surrounded by beachgoers when they stranded in West Kerry on Thursday morning (6 August).
But locals and visitors in the Brandon Bay area have been asked to remain vigilant after the whales – part of a larger pod in the bay at the time – had to be reflected a second time later in the day, as the Irish Examiner reports.
An early call by a local farmer saw the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) get to work quickly to refloat the cetaceans at the busy Goulane Beach.
Shortly afterwards, however, they stranded again at Brandon Pier, before they were again successfully refloated with the help of locals and tourists.
One of the three, displaying signs of illness, had to be towed to deeper waters by a local boater, according to the Irish Independent.
The incident is just the latest among numerous mass stranding of whales and dolphins in the Brandon Bay and Tralee Bay areas within the last 15 years. The Irish Examiner has more on the story HERE.
