The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) has set up a “virtual regional academy” to combat illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) commercial fishing.
The EU-funded e-FishMed project aims to foster co-operation, initially between northern and southern Mediterranean states, on IUU fishing, and best practices in relation to fisheries control and inspection.
It held its second steering committee this week in Madrid, Spain.
Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia are beneficiaries of the project, and the initiative is supported by France, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain.
It may be extended to other Mediterranean countries, and is financed through the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture fund.
Timeline for this initial project is to the beginning of 2025. It also aims to contribute to creating conditions for a “sustainable blue economy” in the Mediterranean region.
EFCA says the common training programme will “contribute to a better understanding and application of the rules through a common learning path available to all the trainers in each beneficiary country”.
It says the “e-learning platform” will be “at the core of the project, improving the effectiveness of training activities aimed to reinforce the knowledge and competencies of fisheries control and inspection staff”.
