An iron hulled sailing ship which was built in 1863 in Ramsey Harbour on the east coast of the Isle of Man, is the theme of a musical written about the tallship.

The Star of India sailed from Britain, to India and New Zealand, before retiring in 1926.

It was then restored as a museum ship in the 1960s and it's now in the USA at San Diego.

The musical, starring Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson amongst others, will take to the stage on Friday at St Paul's Hall in Ramsey.

It's been written by Heather Ruffino, with music by Marilyn Cannell.

Heather says the planning began back in 2013 as ManxRadio has more here with an audio clip.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
