Hurley expected to finish after midnight

14th June 2009

Ireland's Barry Hurley is expected to reach the Ostar finish line just after midnight (local time) after three weeks at sea. The Cobh sailor, in his debut single-handed race across the Atlantic, is the only Irish entrant in the oldest solo challenge on the sailing circuit, originating in 1960 and covering over 3000 miles. The Ostar - Original Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race is put on every four years and is open to 30-50 foot monohulls or multihulls. Hurley's shore support Bob Hobby is standing by at the finish line.

Now 20 days at sea here is the RTE news clip of Barry setting out to cross the Atlantic.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
