Hilary sails in to Arklow

14th June 2009

English woman Hilary Lister (37) arrived in Arklow today after a 14 hour trip across the Irish sea from Fishguard and became the first female quadriplegic to sail the Irish Sea solo. Hilary is aiming to become the first disabled woman to sail solo around Britain. In a series of day sails beginning from Plymouth on the 21st May 2009, Hilary will sail clockwise along the coasts of Cornwall, Wales, The East Coast of Ireland, Scotland, The Caledonian Canal, The East Coast of England and home to the finish line in Dover. Hilary is expected in Wicklow harbour and Howth  next week. She says she cannot update her website in Ireland because of the high cost of roaming charges but more here.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
