Midsummer Twilight at Bray SC

22nd June 2009

Sailors in Bray took advantage of the long evenings to sail the second edition of the Bray Sailing Club Midsummer Twilight Regatta from Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th June. With boats finishing the last race on Saturday just as the sun set, this regatta fully lived up to its name.

Sailing was cancelled on Thursday, following a forecast of 32 knot gusts. Three races were sailed on Friday in windy conditions, and four on Saturday as the weather calmed. 19 boats entered the event, including one visitor from Dun Laoghaire.

In the Laser class racing was close. The speed differences between the three different rigs, adapted to the weight of the helmsman, were minimal. Sean Flanagan's victory was only assured when David Bailey unfortunately broke his mast in the penultimate race. Despite this David finished second, after a tie break with Sean Hayes.

In the class for 2-handed dinghies, Ray Commiskey and Barry Groves sailing a Flying 15 emerged victorious from a long tussle with class colleagues Philip O'Reilly and Beatrice Kinlan.

At the prize-giving, late (very late) on Saturday evening, a special presentation was made to the most important man of the whole event: Terry
Philips, who single-handedly manned the barbecue throughout the three evenings.

The next edition of the Midsummer Twilights will be sailed in June 2010.
