Sunshine for Sovereigns second day

26th June 2009

The second day of the Sovereign’s Cup in Kinsale was sailed in sunshine with a moderate to fresh south easterly. The 138 competitors across six fleets had a riveting day on the water with challenging courses set for all the Classes.

Classes 0 and 1 undertook two 3 mile Windward-Leeward courses south of the Sovereign Islands.

In Class 0 IRC, Eamonn Rohan in Blondie IV has had a perfect row of four bullets from four races to date and leads on 4 points. Anthony O’Leary in Antix Dubh is also consistent with four straight 2nd placings on 6 points, followed by Richard Fildes in Impetuous on 13 points.

Class 0 Progressive is lead jointly by the Reilly/Chambers combination in Crazy Horse with two bullets today, and Tiamat helmed by Tim Costello both on a total of 15 points overall.

Class 1 IRC has Mike McCarthy in Checkmate with 8 points holding a slender lead on Alchimiste helmed by Michael Murphy on 9 points and Tim Fox’s Gringo in third on 12 points.

Alchimiste leads Class 1 Progressive on 27 points with Fools Gold tied with Checkmate on 38 points.

Classes 2, 3 and the Quarter Tonners were set the 8-mile beat to the Daunt Rock with a run to Sandycove for their coastal race in 18 knots of breeze, gusting into the mid-20s and a chop that is particular to that south-easterly wind direction. There were four retirees as conditions took their toll and the sail makers and chandlers shore-side will have a busy night with repairs.

Class 2 IRC remains unchanged with Dux and Xebec trading a first and second placing in today’s races and Anthony Gore-Grimes holding the lead on 7 points from Terry Giles on 9 points.

Class 2 Progressive is lead by a Kinsale boat as Eddie Nicholson in Silver Shadow on 24 points leads the Tingle’s in Alpaca with 38 points. There are four boats tied for third on 50 points.

A Quarter Tonner leads Class 3 IRC with Aquila on 8 points holding off Louise Morton’s strong challenge following her two bullets today yielding her a total overall of 9 points. Hard On Port and Shillelagh are both tied for third with 18 points.

Both White Sail divisions set off on their coastal race to the Black Tom mark in Courtmacsherry Bay with a beat back past the Old Head of Kinsale to Sandycove.

Class 1 is led by the Lyons/Reeves Assarain II on 4 points with two boats; John Whelan’s Wheels and Dan O’Neill’s Xerxes both tied on 12.5 points. Class 2 of the White Sail fleet is very tight with 3 point spread separating the top three boats, Derek Dillon in Big Deal on 18 points, Denis Murphy in Molia on 19 points and Trevor Owens on 20 points.

Again, all classes are scheduled for racing on Friday. Classes 0, 1 and the White Sail divisions will be set Round the Cans courses in the vicinity of Centre Point with Classes 2, 3 and the Quarter Tonners in the Bulman/ Sovereign’s race area for Windward-Leeward courses.

With light airs forecast for tomorrows (Friday) racing, the eventual winner of the Sovereign’s Cup 2009 will have to demonstrate their abilities in all conditions.
