Jetskis, kiteboards face Galway ban

21st April 2008

Galway County Council has published draft legislation banning jet skis from within 200 metres of 21 Galway beaches.

The legislation bans kiteboards from Loughrea lake, and also places several restrictions on surfers, windsurfers, kayakers and other boat users near swimmers.

The proposed jetski ban also extends to Loughs Corrib and Mask, and Loughrea Lake. Other motorboats will be restricted to a five-knot speed limit within 200 metres of shore. Waterskiers and wakeboarders on Lough Corrib will have to stay under 500 knots if they are within 500 metres of any shore or rocky outcrop.

Fines of up to €2,000 can be levied against any offenders.

The legislation (here) are on display until May 30, by which time any submissions or appeals against their contents must be lodged.
