Download a lifeboat pager

30th April 2008

All credit to the RNLI - not just for their trojan rescue work, but for some innovative marketing.

The good folks at Lifeboats HQ have come up with a way for you to keep track of what boats are launching and when - a new desktop pager.

The pager downloads to your computer and alerts you each time a lifeboat launches in the British Isles, and includes details of the last 12 shouts.

The pager sits under all the other windows on your desktop, or hides in your toolbar until a boat goes on a shout, at which point you are alerted with a ping.

The pager tracks the last twelve shouts, and at the time when yours truly discovered this new novelty item, Crosshaven lifeboat had had a busy day, called out in winds gusting to 32 knots (according to Marine.ie )at 11.30pm on Monday night, having responded to a call seven hours earlier in even worse conditions.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
