Injured Tombstoner rescued

25th July 2009

At 10 o'clock this morning Swansea Coastguard on the far side of the Iriush Sea received a 999 call from a man reporting that his friend had jumped from cliffs in Southgate in South Gower and had dislocated his shoulder.

Swansea Coastguard sent Mumbles Coastguard Rescue Team to the scene, as well as the Mumbles All Weather Lifeboat, who was on exercise in the area.  An RAF Helicopter from Chivenor was also on exercise and diverted to proceed to the casualty, who had now managed to scramble onto some rocks.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene and placed the casualty on a stretcher before taking him to the Swansea Morriston Hospital for treatment.

Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager Dave Hughes said:

“The casualty, a 45 year old local man, is now receiving treatment in hospital.

Since 2005 there have been 10 deaths, and 36 serious injuries due to Tombstoning in the UK.  People often do not realise how dangerous it is to jump from cliffs and rocks into water, and that the depth of the water can change according to tides, or that there may be submerged objects underneath, like rocks, or debris.  In this case, the man sustained a serious injury just from landing at a bad angle.  Our message to members of the public is – don't jump into the unknown.”
