All boats over 7 metres to fly the flag

2nd May 2008

The Government is seeking submissions from the public on its proposals for a new national register of vessels, which include a stipluation that all registered vessels must fly the Irish flag.

Vessels under seven metres in length are exempt, unless fitted with an engine of power greater than 20KW. The length requirement would see boats like Dragons or J24s required to register and fly the flag, while SB3s would be exempt.

The proposed measures would give the Department of Transport the power to seize vessels that are required to be registered but have not been. Owners could be subjected to fines or have their vessel disposed of by the Government.

Boats coming into Ireland, either as holidaymakers or for sailing events, would be given temporary registration.

Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, said: "The proposed new vessel registration system is an important step in improving safety and security in our marine environment. The proposals will improve the information available on vessels operating in Irish waters. They will assist in ensuring that those registered under the Irish Flag adhere to both national and international requirements."

It is hoped that better registration would help the Government identify craft more easily for security and rescue purposes.
