A Rum Do at Cowes Week 2009

27th July 2009

Mount Gay Rum is going all out to make its presence felt throughout this year’s Cowes Week. With a mix of promotions and competitions on the cards, this heritage brand is really mixing it up to reaffirm its loyalty to the sailing fraternity competing at this most famous of annual sailing regattas which runs from 1–8 August.

Mount Gay, past and present, has always been closely linked to the world of sailing; from 17th century navigation when in order to prove passage across the Atlantic from Europe to the ‘New World’, sailors were obliged to bring back a barrel of Barbados rum to add weight to their words, to present-day regattas and competitors wearing Mount Gay Red Caps with pride.

Gemma Adams, Brand Manager for Mount Gay, comments: “Cowes Week is the world’s oldest regatta so it is the ideal platform for us to promote Mount Gay, the world’s oldest rum.  As the rum that invented rum, Mount Gay’s heritage and association with the sailing community has helped cement the brand’s position in the golden rum category and we hope supporting Cowes Week will only further propel its status and popularity.”

Sailors and visitors alike will be able to enjoy their favourite Mount Gay Rum, whether Eclipse or the premium Extra Old Rum at all the key watering holes in and around Cowes during the regatta. Special tastings of Mount Gay Extra Old Rum served with truffles created by local chocolatier Chocs Away, will be sampled at a selection of dinners, cocktail parties and balls throughout the Week.

Cowes Radio, the regatta’s radio station, will be running a Mount Gay Crew of the Day Competition selected by presenters Dick Johnson and Simon Vigar and a fabulous Hunt the Mount Gay Rum Barrel cryptic clue to the location of a fictional rum barrel, which will be given out each morning on Roger Price’s Breakfast Show between 0700 and 1000. Prizes are, of course, a bottle of Mount Gay Eclipse and Red Cap.

To help entice even more people to enjoy the delights on offer at Cowes Week this year, Mount Gay is also running national, specialist press and online competitions to bring winners down for some racing on board a fully crewed Farr 65. However, the hottest ticket in town surely has to be to the famous Red Cap Party being held at Shepards Wharf on Thursday 6th August. The first 500 Cowes Week competitors with tickets through the door will be rewarded with a Red Cap to wear and treasure forever.
