O'Leary and Goodbody team up for London

4th October 2008

Peter O'Leary has parted company with Beijing crew Steven Milne but the Cork helmsman is to continue on in the Star keelboat for London with a new crew Tim Goodbody.

The development was reported yesterday in Friday's Irish Times Sailing Column.

It is confirmation that Ireland will have two Star keelboats campaigning for 2012 with a London declaration already made in August by Max Treacy and Anthony Shanks.

O'Leary's new partner, the Finn dinghy representative from Beijing, is based in Dun Laoghaire. The pair sailed together at the recent SB3 world championships bringing home eighth, the top Irish result in the 137-boat fleet.

Treacy has previously campaigned for Athens and Beijing but has so far missed out on selection. This year the decision to send Peter O'Leary instead of Max Treacy was made by a selection committee rather than on the water trials, a decision that was unsuccessfully appealed by Treacy to to the OCI.

It was a divisive period for Olympic sailing and the early announcement by both teams is an indication that the stage is set for the next Star wars.
