Error forces return of IRC trophy

17th June 2008

A Royal Ocean Racing Club error in the calculation of the overall trophy for the British IRC National championships on the Solent has led to a Howth Yacht Club entry having to hand back the trophy two days after it had been awarded.

News of the error broke yesterday following a telephone call to skipper David Nixon of Rosie from RORC CEO Eddie Warden Owen.

A fresh calculation of the overall points relative to the number of starters revealed that in fact the winner of class one should have lifted the overall British IRC trophy last Sunday.

Happily for Irish cruiser racer fans this means that another Irish boat, Jump Juice (Conor and Denise Phelan) are the recipients of the British trophy and Rosie retains her class two crown.

"Celebrations had been great so it's a big disappointment to learn of the miscalculation. We're gutted but we can't argue with figures. We congratulate Conor and the crew of Jump" said Nixon.
