Fast ride to Capetown - Dragon holds third

28th October 2008

In what looks increasingly like the last week of the first leg the front runners have turned left for Cape Town and the Dragon is among them. They will be looking to hook into an area of low pressure which has the potential to slingshot them across the South Atlantic.  Green Dragon is staying with the front runners, holding onto third 28 miles behind leaders Ericsson 4, and 25 miles behind second placed PUMA.

The game of cat and mouse at the head of the leader board continues with Green Dragon, Ericsson 4 and Puma all positioning themselves for the oncoming weather system and the 40-50kt winds that are forecast to arrive in 24hrs time. The team are in good shape onboard and have been resting as best they can ahead of what could be record breaking conditions. The teams will have to decide on speed versus prudence over the next few days as this will be the first time that this new generation of Volvo 70s will have raced in these testing conditions.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
