Afloat web editor picks up award

25th February 2009

Afloat web editor Markham Nolan was among the winners at the recent fourth annual Irish Blog Awards last week. Markham, a keen sailor, who also blogs on afloat.ie picked up the award for Best Blog at a ceremony at Cork Airport International Hotel. His blog, expad.ie, held off stiff competition from economist David McWilliams, a Pricewatch blog from Conor Pope on The Irish Times, and The Star crime reporter Michael O’Toole’s Crime.Ink.

‘It was nice to get nominated, even nicer to get shortlisted, and literally a complete shock to win the award,’ said Markham, who has been working as a freelance journalist since returning from Australia last year.

It was while working for the Irish Echo newspaper there that he came up with the name of his blog, which deals with everything from dodgy bank loans to the more legitimate use of blogs as marketing tools.

Markham claims that blogging is going to get stronger: ‘If you look at the likes of Obama, he used blogging to great effect in his campaign. Most of the papers are picking up on it now, nearly every mainstream paper will hae a couple of blogs at least on their site. It’s just a different tone of voice for media.’

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
