Mixed bag of luck at Tribesmen Head of the River

31st March 2009

The thirty-first running to the Tribesmen Head of the River in Galway this past weekend ended up with a curtailed programme due to unpredictable squalls which rendered early racing unsafe in the opinion of the organising officials.

At noon the decision was made to eliminate the Scullers and pairs entirely, and to run the first race in its place, with the stipulation that it be restricted to Junior-18’s, Seniors and Intermediates only. As a result, only 25 boats took to the water when 80 might have been a normal expectation.

As expected, the local students from NUIG proved supreme in the men’s Senior (pictured above) and Intermediate fours, though the latter had a mere .3 sec to spare over Galway RC.

The UCD victory in the Women’s Eight was not a surprise, though the fact that the University of Limerick were a mere 11sec adrift will allow no room for complacency.

By the time the delayed final event commenced at 5:00pm, conditions were dramatically improved and a full field of 67 boats raced. Once again the NUIG seniors reigned supreme, capturing the premier event, the Men’s Eights. Galway RC took a well deserved Intermediate Eight, and their composite with Skibbereen and Shannon captured the Quad Scull. Local school St. Josephs added to a long line of such victories in taking the Men’s Junior-18 Eights.

On the ladies side of the draw the Tribesmen/Derry double of Dilleen/D’Urso were comprehensive winners of the senior Double Scull -  not bad for a couple of  Junior-18’s.

NUIG ladies win the Intermediate and Novice four.
