Tanks to go - Galway Volvo Ocean Race statement

Following the news that the tanks in the centre of the Galway docks area are to be moved, Lets do it Galway have issued the following statement:

Let’s Do It Galway, the organisers of the Galway Volvo Ocean Race which will arrive in Galway 23 May for a 2 week festival of sea and land based activities welcomes the decision by Topaz to decommission the tanks to allow for the race village area to be prepared.

Commenting on a statement released by Topaz today Tuesday 31 March 2009, John Killeen Chairman of Let’s Do It Galway stated ‘ we appreciate the efforts that Topaz and all parties involved in this negotiation have invested in reaching a decision to allow ground works commence in preparation for the Galway Volvo Ocean Race. We have been working for almost 18 months to plan the biggest sporting event and festival in Ireland in 2009. The support we have received from the Government through Failte Ireland and through business both nationally and locally has been outstanding in the current environment and we can now showcase the best of Ireland to a global audience through hosting one of the world’s premier sporting events’.

Let’s Do It Galway will release plans for the race village and their festival programme week commencing 06 April 2009.
