Tough Conditions in Schull

17th April 2009

All fleets were ashore early yesterday (15th April) at the ISA Youth Nationals & Junior Pathway Championship 2009, which are taking place in Schull, Co Cork this week. On the outer course, where the Youth Nationals classes were competing, the conditions were extremely windy. Short, choppy waves provided very testing sea conditions for the sailors. With an easterly wind present, the big swells from Tuesday were missing but conditions were much tougher.

Laser 4.7
The Laser 4.7 fleet came ashore early when their first race of the day was abandoned. Henry McLoughlin is the leader going into the final day of racing tomorrow (Fri 17th April).  However the next four sailors; Wesley Brownlow, John Flynn, Mark Condy and Michael Molloy also have 20 points and all will be eager for the opportunity to race on Friday.

420
Timmy O’Laoire & Brian Kelleher won both their races today and have emerged as the new overnight leader with 14 points in the 420 fleet.  Rob Lehane & Iarlath Kennedy are 4 points behind but still within reach of O’Laoire & Kelleher.

Laser Radial
Chris Penney (18points) maintains his lead in the Laser Radial fleet, just one point ahead of Matthew O'Dowd who placed second in both races today. Oliver Loughead, who won both races today lies in third place with 21 points. It will be hard to predict the outcome in advance of tomorrow’s racing.

Rory Fitzpatrick, ISA Youth & Development Manager commented:

“The competition is very tight this year and as this is also a selection trial there is an added incentive to achieve.”

The ISA Youth Nationals encompasses selection trials for the Laser Radials and 420. It also acts as a qualifier for sailors interested in the ISAF Youth World Championships, which will take place in Brazil in July.

Junior Pathway Championship
The Race Committee decided not to allow the Topper 4.2 class go afloat today in the strong 18-20 knot wind. However both the Feva and Topper fleets completed their two races in Schull Harbour.

Topper
Despite Stephen Duke’s two race wins, he is 2nd overall on 14 points. The fleet leader is Finn Lynch who is in a very strong position with 8 points and counts 6 race wins todate.

Feva
In the Feva class Richard Roberts & Paul Martin (8 points) maintains their overnight lead after counting a first and fourth in today's races. Isabella Morehead & Conor Deegan are in 2nd place with 20 points following a win in the final race of the day.
