Dolphins delight in Dublin Bay

22nd April 2009

Looking up from the newspaper and seeing bottlenose dolphins swarming around the waters of Seapoint and Blackrock was quite a thrill for commuters yesterday morning (21st April). DART travellers were treated to the sight of fins breaking the water, and watched in delighted disbelief as more and more fins became visible.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) said it had evidence that dolphins were 'travelling around the entire Irish coast'.

According to Seapoint resident Arthur Reynolds, the bottlenose dolphins were possibly driving whiting fry into shallower water, and that their presence indicates warmer weather and sea temperatures.

IWDG spokesman Simon Berrow said more sightings were expected and urged people to be on the look-out. Mr Berrow also said he had eyewitness reports of up to 13 dolphins, and that they remained in the bay until around noon, 'giving watchers a great display of aerial acrobatics'.
