Schoolboy will be youngest competitor

5th May 2009

Ten year old Grange Park Primary schoolboy, Noah McWatters, will be the youngest competitor in the Hamilton Shipping Sigma 33 Irish and Open Championships hosted by Royal Ulster Yacht Club in early June and sailed in Belfast Lough.

As he has been racing on his Dad’s boat, Ay Caramba, since he was seven, Noah is something of an old hand, being a particularly useful crew, working on the foredeck and retrieving the spinnaker.

Around twenty Sigma 33 yachts will compete in the three day event sponsored by Hamilton Shipping with strong representation from the local fleet of nine boats. It is expected that they will be joined by visitors from Dublin Bay, Scotland, the Isle of Man and Strangford Lough.

Event organiser is Steve McWatters and in charge of racing will be Principal Race Officer Robin Gray, who together with the committee boat team and accompanying mark layers, can be relied upon to run the event like clockwork.

Gordon Hamilton, Managing Director of Hamilton Shipping, is delighted to be involved with the event. “This is the second time we have sponsored the Sigma Irish Championships and we are delighted to be associated with the competition”, he said.

The championships will run from 5th until 7th June, with the fleet based in Bangor Marina.
