Pay to launch at Galway's 'only slipway'

6th May 2009

Spectators going afloat to watch the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) will be charged to launch their boat in Galway by the club that controls the only slipway. Galway Bay Sailing Club is to charge 60 Euro per week for launching and parking of Ribs. The club intend to charge €40 for launching and parking sailing dinghies. The price list of their charges is posted on the club website. "The club have the only launch and park facilities in the Greater Galway Area - there are no such facilities in Galway City", according to the Irish Sailing Association (ISA).  On its website the ISA also says that the Garda traffic management during the Volvo stopover may not allow RIB's or other such vessels into the city.

'No VOR launching charges' - Galway Bay SC.  See story update here

Details from the ISA website are as follows:

VOR GALWAY: LAUNCHING AND PARKING FACILITIES FOR VEHICLES & OTHER VESSELS
In association with Lets Do It Galway and the Volvo Race Management, Galway Bay Sailing Club has been asked to provide launching and parking facilities for RIBS and other vessels. It should be noted that GBSC have the only launch and park facilities in the Greater Galway Area - there are no such facilities in Galway City - and it is possible that the Garda traffic management during the Volvo stopover may not allow RIB's or other such vessels into the city. A parking spot may be reserved by contacting the Club Manager, John Lowther, at 091 794527. Details of tarriffs can be had on the club website, www.gbsc.ie
