Take the election to the water

6th May 2009

All our counties have one thing in common - they touch lake, river or sea. But these waterways also suffer a shared neglect. We live on an island, but the national focus is firmly on the land. For maritime communities around this country, nothing illustrates Official Ireland’s failure to harness the potential of our waterways more than the decision to remove the Department of the Marine from Government. As a result the marine sector was disseminated into EIGHT Departments, with politicians and civil servants pushing maritime matters from one to the other, the classic "pass the buck" of officialdom – "no-one in charge, no-one is responsible."

It is time for the maritime communities to unite, across the broad marine spectrum. Together the marine sector can advance. The setting-up of an Inter-Departmetnal Co-ordinating Group for the eight Departments is, at least, a start, but the voice of Maritime Ireland must be heard in response, from the leisure sector, shipping, fishing, angling, the environmental interests, all together to push for more attention to the marine sector.

There is an opportunity for creating thousands of jobs in rural, coastal communities if the marine industry was nurtured and promoted.

Afloat magazine wants you to join with it in compiling a national list of Ireland’s marine requirements, county by county. We intend to present our findings to the new Inter-Departmental Marine Coordinating Group. But we need your help.

What do coastal communities need from local elections? The need for investment is clear, but surely we also need the political will to change the agenda in government.

Let candidates for the local and European elections in your area (and for the by-elections in Dublin) know what marine measures are needed in your constituency by adding to our list.

We'd also like to hear from candidates about what marine measures they are setting out for their constituencies.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
