Engine failure leads to Lifeboat launch

22nd May 2009

Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched following a request from Valentia Coast Guard to go the assistance of  four persons on board a 44ft cruiser that had suffered engine failure. The RNLI lifeboat with helm, Eleanor Hooker, Peter Clarke and Ciaran Murphy on board, launched today at 14.00hrs. Weather conditions were fair; south Westerly winds, Force 4.  The lifeboat located the 44ft cruiser just north of Terryglass harbour.

The four persons on board, on holiday from Switzerland, were safe and unharmed. An RNLI crew member boarded the vessel and advised all to put on lifejackets. When the engine failed, the skipper of the vessel had weighed anchor to prevent them being pushed up onto rocks.  However, the cruiser had been driven back by winds, and though not aground and held by her anchor, was in dangerously rocky water. The casualty vessel had not suffered any damage other than engine failure and was made ready for tow. After some effort, the anchor, which was stuck fast on rocks, was freed and the vessel was towed to Terryglass Harbour. The passengers on board the casualty vessel thanked the crew of the lifeboat for their “speedy response and help”. The lifeboat returned to Station and was ready for service again at 16.15hrs.
