'Atika' floats again

28th May 2009

After a month under water the steel hulled, 40 foot yacht Atika has been raised from the seabed off Lambay and brought back to Malahide. She appears in remarkably good condition. On 18 April, the Irish Coast Guard received a MayDay call at 16:58pm from the yacht Atika. This was a 40-foot blue and white yacht sailing off Lambay Island. The MayDay call stated there were two persons on board. See our photos of the sinking and the recovery over the fold:

Following receipt of the MayDay call, the MRCC tasked the Coast Guard helicopter and the Skerries Lifeboat. The Coast Guard helicopter arrived at 17:07 and advised the vessel was sinking by the bow and they were deploying the winchman. Our photo, thanks to Malahide marina, shows Atika's mast tip above water and her crew safely in the liferaft.

The Coast Guard helicopter recovered two persons and the Skerries lifeboat recovered a liferaft. The Coast Guard helicopter returned to base and released the rescued persons. The Skerries Life Boat returned to its station, ready for service.

Atika was moored at Malahide Marina prior to the rescue and this week she was lifted from the seabed and reader Stephen Mullaney has sent us photographs of the recovered yacht coming back to the marina showing her exterior and interior and the hull damage.
