Dun Laoghaire loses out on Volvo Race stopover

3rd June 2009

The backlash as to why Dublin missed out on the Volvo Stopover and the attendant €40m festival has begun, reports Kevin Doyle in The Herald. A major election row has erupted in Dun Laoghaire over Galway's hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Fianna Fail members of the council have labelled their Fine Gael and Labour counterparts as "inept" after the south Dublin town missed out on the prestigious event

Six FF councillors have strongly criticised the council's majority parties for not bidding to host the event.

The councillors, Gareth Crowe, Cormac Devlin, Larry Lohan, Fred Gilligan, Peter O'Brien and Barry Conway, are alleging that Dun Laoghaire missed out on a tourist boost of up to €40m and the opportunity to save dozens of jobs in the areas.

By next weekend, an estimated 200,000 people will have visited Galway to see the boats and take part in the festivities. But the fuming FF representatives want to know: "Why did our sleepy Council in Dun Laoghaire not bid for this event?" Fine Gael councillor John Bailey hit back saying the attack was "ironic".
